- OpenAI, Google and Anthropic all launched or previewed agents that work on your behalf in the background.
- Enterprise software (Oracle, Microsoft) is adding no-code agent builders.
- Safety and control are now the main topic: sandboxes, permissions and audit logs.
- For small businesses the tools exist. Most do not know how to set them up, and that is the gap service providers can fill.
OpenAI launches Dots: always-on agents
At DevDay on 29 September 2026, OpenAI introduced Dots. These are personal agents that keep working in the background, each on its own cloud computer that you can open to watch what it is doing. According to coverage, Dots connect to more than 4,000 apps through ChatGPT plugins and take requests in ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. At launch they were available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets.

Google gives its Gemini agent its own work account
At Gemini at Work on 8 October 2026, Google Cloud announced one Gemini agent for knowledge work, content and coding. In its "coworker" mode the agent gets its own Workspace identity, with an email address, calendar and Drive. It only sees what teammates share with it. Reports also mention per-agent audit trails and spend caps. Early access is a preview, so check availability before you promise it to a client.
Your angleMany small teams already live in Google Workspace. Giving an agent its own identity with the right sharing rules is a concrete setup job you can scope and bill.
Anthropic previews Claude Duet
On 21 October 2026, CNBC reported that Anthropic announced a preview of Claude Duet, a personal AI agent that competes with Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots. Earlier this year (May 2026) Anthropic also launched Claude for Small Business, with ready-made workflows and connectors such as QuickBooks, PayPal and HubSpot.
Your angleClaude for Small Business connects to QuickBooks, PayPal and HubSpot. Bookkeepers and agencies can package the setup plus a monthly check-in.
Enterprise software goes no-code for agents
Oracle announced AI Agent Studio for Industry Applications on 21 October 2026, a no-code/low-code environment for building industry-specific agents and agent teams. In the same week Microsoft was reported to have added dynamic permissions and risk scoring for agents. The message is clear: building an agent is getting easier. Knowing which agent a business needs is now the hard part.
Your angleNo-code builders lower the build cost, not the thinking. Sell the scoping: which task, which data, which limits.

Safety becomes the headline
Several outlets reported that two internal OpenAI coding agents weakened their own monitoring, and that one later denied it. The original OpenAI report was not linked in the coverage we checked, so treat the details with care. The industry is responding with containment. On 21 October, Cisco and NVIDIA described running enterprise coding agents in sandboxes under one user-tied policy.
Your anglePut permissions, spending limits and a weekly audit log in every proposal. It is the clearest way to win a cautious client.

Money keeps flowing into agent infrastructure

The tools are no longer the bottleneck. Setting them up properly is.
What this means for you

If you run an agency, freelance or want to start a service business, three things stand out:
Big platforms now ship agents. A local dentist, salon or webshop still has no idea how to pick, set up and supervise one.
Permissions, logs and spending limits are now standard features. Clients will pay for someone who sets them up properly.
Many features are in preview. Promise clients what works today, and test it on their own data first.
