Multi-agent systems, explained by watching one work

One AI agent can answer a message. A team of agents can run a whole process for a business: qualify the lead, book the call, follow up, and check the work. Below you pick a business, send a test lead and watch four agents hand it to each other.

The short answer

A multi-agent system is several AI agents that each do one job, with their own instructions and tools, and pass work to each other. It is easier to test and improve than one giant agent, which is why most serious business automations end up this way.

Build an agent team in 10 seconds

1. Pick a business. 2. Press Send a test lead. 3. Watch which agent does what. Nothing is sent anywhere — it is a simulation of the hand-offs.

The log of the agent team shows up here.

This is the kind of system businesses pay for every month. The free training shows how to build one and sell it →

Single agent vs multi-agent system

Single agentMulti-agent system
SetupOne prompt, all toolsSeveral small agents, one job each
TestingHard: one change can break everythingEasier: test and fix one agent at a time
PermissionsOne agent can touch every toolEach agent only gets the tools it needs
Best forOne clear task (answer FAQ, summarise)A full process (lead → booking → follow-up)
Watch out forPrompt gets long and unreliableHand-offs need clear rules and logging

Rule of thumb: start with one agent. Split it when the prompt keeps growing, when steps need different tools, or when you want a second agent to check the output.

The 4 multi-agent patterns that actually get used

1. Pipeline

Intake → Qualify → Book → Follow-up

Each agent finishes its step and passes a clean result to the next. The most common pattern for leads, orders and onboarding.

2. Manager + workers

Manager → [Research, Write, Send]

One agent plans and hands out tasks, specialists do them, the manager combines the results. Good for reports and content.

3. Router

Router → Sales | Support | Billing

A first agent reads the message and sends it to the right specialist. Typical for one inbox or one WhatsApp number with many kinds of questions.

4. Maker + checker

Writer → Reviewer → (fix) → Send

A second agent checks the first one against rules (tone, prices, facts) before anything reaches a customer. Cheap insurance against mistakes.

Frameworks and tools for multi-agent systems

You don't need all of them. Pick one that fits how you like to build.

ToolTypeGood for
CrewAIOpen-source Python frameworkRole-based "crews" of agents with tasks
LangGraphOpen-source library (LangChain)Agent flows as a graph with state and loops
AutoGenOpen-source framework (Microsoft)Agents that work by talking to each other
OpenAI Agents SDKOpen-source SDKAgents with tools and hand-offs to other agents
n8nWorkflow automation toolLow-code: AI agent nodes inside visual workflows

For a business client the framework matters less than the result: does the lead get an answer in a minute, is the appointment booked, does someone follow up. For tool prices, see our guide to building AI agents.

How to sell an agent team to a business

Businesses don't buy "multi-agent architecture". They buy "every lead gets an answer and a booking, even at 11 pm". A common way to package it: a one-time setup fee plus a monthly fee for running and improving it. Play with the numbers:

Recurring per month€3,600
First year incl. setup€49,200
Clients for €10k/month at this fee12

Example math before costs (tools, model usage, your time). An example, not a promise: your niche, price and delivery decide what you earn.

Questions

What is a multi-agent system?

Several AI agents, each with one job and its own instructions and tools, working together on one process — for example qualify → book → follow up.

What is the difference between a single agent and a multi-agent system?

A single agent has one prompt and all the tools. A multi-agent system splits the work over specialists, which is easier to test, but the hand-offs need clear rules.

Which frameworks are used to build multi-agent systems?

CrewAI, LangGraph, AutoGen and the OpenAI Agents SDK in code; n8n with AI agent nodes for low-code builds.

Do I always need multiple agents?

No. Start with one agent that does one job well and split only when the prompt grows too long, steps need different tools, or you want a checker.
