How to test an AI agent before it goes live

An AI agent that posts, mails or answers customers can do a lot of good, and a lot of damage when it gets one thing wrong. The fix is not to test less, but to test in the right order: a safe test round, a short checklist, and a careful first day. This guide walks through all of it.

Step 1: run a test round where nothing leaves the building

  1. Switch on test mode. The agent does a complete round with real data, but it may not post, send, book or pay anything. It only writes down what it would do.
  2. Ask for a plan plus proof. For every step: what it looked at, what it decided and why, and the exact text or file it would publish.
  3. Give it one normal case and one strange case. A clear lead question, and a vague or angry one. The strange case shows whether the agent hands off to a person instead of guessing.
  4. Stop it after one round. Read everything before you run it again. One careful round teaches you more than ten unattended ones.

Step 2: what to check in the results

Step 3: the go-live checklist

  1. One measurable daily goal, for example "every new lead gets a reply" or "one post live".
  2. Logins work in the agent's own browser, and only the accounts it needs are connected.
  3. Daily caps are set low for the first day.
  4. A pause button that stops the agent and its scheduled jobs at once.
  5. A dashboard where you can see what it is doing now, what it finished and where it is stuck.

Questions

How do I test an AI agent without risk?

Run it in a test mode first: the agent does a full round, but nothing is posted, sent or paid. It only writes its plan and proof, so you can check every decision before it touches a real customer.

What should I check in a test round?

Check that the agent understood the goal, used the right accounts, stayed inside its daily caps, left proof for every step and reported what it could not do. Then check the output itself: would you send this to a client?

When is an AI agent ready to go live?

When a test round passes without surprises, the daily goal is measurable, logins work, and there is a pause button. Go live with low caps first and watch the first day closely.
