What are AI agents? Watch one think, then test yourself

An AI agent is software that doesn't just answer, it gets things done: it reads a situation, decides the next step and uses tools to do it. Below you can watch that loop run on one real customer message, then take a 60-second quiz to see if you can spot an agent. It is also the skill businesses now pay for every month.

The short answer

AI agents are programs, usually built on a language model, that work towards a goal by running a loop: perceive (read the input), reason (plan the next step), act (use a tool: calendar, CRM, email, payments) and learn (check the result and adjust). A chatbot only answers; an agent acts. An automation follows a fixed path; an agent chooses its own steps.

The loop every AI agent runs

A salon gets this WhatsApp at 23:12: “Do you have anything Saturday morning for a cut and colour?” Press play and follow the agent through its four steps. It is a simulation: nothing is sent anywhere.

Press play to see what the agent does in each step.

AI agent vs chatbot vs automation

The three get mixed up all the time. The quickest way to tell them apart: who decides the next step, and can it actually do something?

Agents come in different designs. The textbook has five types of AI agents, from simple reflex to learning agents. For a wider definition see IBM's explainer.

What an AI agent is made of

Every business agent has the same four parts. Get these right and the agent is reliable; skip one and it isn't.

🧠 A model

The language model that reads, reasons and writes. It is the brain, not the whole agent.

🛠 Tools

Connections it can use: calendar, CRM, email, WhatsApp, payments. Tools turn talk into action.

📚 Knowledge & memory

Prices, opening hours, policies and what happened earlier in the conversation.

🎯 Goal & guardrails

What “done” means, what it may never do, and when it hands over to a human.

How these run in production (hosting, logs, monitoring) is covered in AI agent infrastructure. When one agent isn't enough, several work together in a multi-agent system.

What businesses pay for AI agents

An agent that answers, books and follows up keeps working every day, so businesses pay for it every month. Most AI agencies package it as a setup fee plus a monthly fee for hosting, monitoring and improving. Play with the numbers:

Recurring per month€3,750
First year incl. setup€52,500
Clients for €10k/month at this fee14

Example math before costs (model usage, tools, hosting, your time). An example, not a promise: your niche, price and delivery decide what you earn.

Questions

What are AI agents in simple terms?

Software that gets a goal, looks at the situation, decides what to do and does it with tools such as a calendar, CRM or email. It repeats that loop until the goal is reached.

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers. An agent also acts: it books, updates or sends, and decides the next step itself.

What is the difference between an AI agent and an automation?

An automation follows a fixed path drawn in advance. An agent chooses its own steps, so it can handle cases nobody planned for.

What are examples of AI agents?

A WhatsApp booking agent, a lead follow-up agent, a support agent that checks orders and refunds within limits, and coding agents. See 20 examples.

Can you make money with AI agents?

Yes: a common model is a setup fee plus a monthly fee per business. What you earn depends on your niche, price and delivery.
