- Walmart (21 Oct) launched the Agent Gateway: approved agents such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta's Muse can search and buy, and the shopper can approve every order or set a spending limit.
- Amazon (from 20 Sep) blocks Meta's Muse as an "unauthorised AI agent", saying it does not identify itself.
- Shopify (28 Sep) opened checkout, including Shop Pay, to browser agents; the order goes through only after the buyer approves. None of the three lists a price.
Walmart Agent Gateway: a front door for approved agents
On 21 October 2026 Walmart CEO John Furner announced the Agent Gateway at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco, TechCrunch reported. It is an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search Walmart and Sam's Club inventory and buy on the shopper's behalf. Walmart named integrations with Meta's Muse, ChatGPT, Gemini and others.
The control sits with the shopper. Agent Profiles, rolling out next month, give each agent its own profile. The shopper can approve every transaction or set a spending limit, and delete the profile at any time; Walmart compares it to adding an authorized user to a credit card. Walmart+ is not required. Agents cannot access the shopper's payment information and do not get purchase history directly. Agents that do not follow the rules are blocked, and the normal returns process applies when an agent buys the wrong thing.
Your angleWalmart just showed what a good agent policy looks like: a known door, a limit the customer sets, and the right to say no. A small store will not build an MCP server, but it can copy the thinking. Sell an "agent policy page": which agents the store accepts, what they may do, what needs the customer's approval and how returns work when an agent gets it wrong.

Amazon blocks Meta's Muse: no entry for agents that hide
Retail Gazette reported on 22 September 2026 that Amazon started showing users of Meta's Muse shopping agent a message saying an "unauthorised AI agent" breaches its conditions of use. Meta had unveiled Muse on 8 September. Amazon gave three reasons: Meta did not tell Amazon before launch, Muse does not identify itself while it browses, and Amazon had concerns about shopper credentials. Amazon said it first asked Meta to remove Amazon from Muse and Meta declined. Meta said Muse cannot see passwords or payment information.
It is not Amazon's first fight over agents: the same report notes that Amazon sued Perplexity over its Comet browser agent last November. TechCrunch added that Adidas also appears to block Muse.

Your angleMost small stores have no idea whether agents visit them or what their terms say about it. Sell an "agent traffic check": read the server logs and analytics for agent visits, check what the terms of service and robots.txt allow, and write down one decision per agent type. Blocking is a valid choice too, as long as it is a choice.

Shopify opens checkout to browser agents
TechCrunch reported on 28 September 2026 that Shopify added WebMCP support to checkout, including Shop Pay. Shopify already supported WebMCP on storefronts and carts; now a browser-based agent can read a checkout, update it and complete it through three tools: get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout. The order is placed after the buyer approves it. Gil Greenberg of Shopify said it is rolling out to all eligible merchants.
The report also mentions Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and its hosted MCP server, and direct partnerships with agents such as Muse and Instinct. For a Shopify merchant this means agent checkout arrives through the platform rather than through custom code, but the product data the agent reads is still the merchant's job.
Your angleAn agent can only buy what it can understand. Sell an "agent-ready product feed": clear titles, real sizes and variants, stock that is up to date, shipping and return rules written in plain text, and structured data on every product page. Then test it: ask ChatGPT or Gemini to find and buy the product, and record where it gets stuck.

The agent is the new shopper at the door. Every store needs a rule for who gets in.

Before you sell an agent-ready store service: 5 checks

- Test with real agents first. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or another agent to find and buy one of the client's products. Save what happens. That is your baseline, and it shows the client the problem in two minutes.
- Fix the data, not the hype. Titles, variants, stock, prices, shipping and returns must be correct and readable. An agent that buys the wrong size costs the store a return.
- Write the rule down. Decide per agent type: allow, require the buyer's approval, or block. Put it in the terms and on a policy page.
- Never handle payment details. Use the platform's own checkout and approval step. You and the agent should never see a card number or a password.
- Promise access, not sales. No one can guarantee that an agent will pick a store. Sell a store that agents can read and buy from, and report what the tests show. Our pricing calculator helps you set your own fee.
One agent, one product, one purchase attempt tells you where it breaks.
Agents read product data literally. Vague titles become wrong orders.
Allow, approve or block, written down before the agents arrive.
