AI agents are going industry-specific, and that is your niche

Between 16 and 20 October 2026, Motive launched agents that call truck drivers and open work orders, Harvey showed how law firm Hogan Lovells Cadwalader builds its own agents per practice, and Demandbase released an agent that tracks what AI assistants say about a brand. Three sectors, one pattern: the agent only works once someone sets it up for how that industry actually runs.

  • Motive Agents (19 Oct) act on fleet safety and maintenance signals: they call drivers, open work orders and escalate to managers, instead of sending one more alert.
  • Harvey (16 Oct) is rolling out at Hogan Lovells Cadwalader, which builds its own agents for knowledge management, capital markets and international arbitration.
  • Demandbase (20 Oct) launched an AEO Agent that tracks how AI assistants describe a brand, plus a Campaign Agent and an Audience Agent, with access through APIs and MCP.

Motive Agents: AI that acts before a truck breaks down

Motive, which sells dashcams and fleet software, launched Motive Agents. Instead of alerting a fleet manager, the agents act. Its assistant Atlas can call a driver who shows signs of fatigue or is heading into severe weather. When a fault code puts a vehicle out of service, an agent opens a work order in Motive Maintenance. If nobody responds, it escalates to a manager. Another agent uses AI Dashcam Plus to flag engines left idling, taking the outside temperature into account.

Fleets start from guided workflows, templates and a library of pre-built agents. Early next year, Motive says, customers will be able to build agents in plain language and set them to work towards a goal. The company puts the cost of preventable fleet problems at $46 billion a year, its own estimate, and says the agents are available to its close to 100,000 customers. They were shown at the ATA conference in Charlotte. Chief product officer Hemant Banavar: "Our customers don't need another alert. They need action."

Your angleMost fleets that buy Motive will not design their own agents. Deciding which signals should trigger a call, writing what the agent says to a driver, and agreeing who gets the escalation is consulting work. If you know transport or logistics, "we set up and tune your fleet agents" is a niche service with a clear buyer.

Harvey at Hogan Lovells Cadwalader: agents built per legal practice

Law firm Hogan Lovells Cadwalader is rolling out Harvey, the legal AI platform, across Corporate & Finance, Litigation & Arbitration and Regulatory/IP. The firm is building its own agents on Harvey for Knowledge Management, Capital Markets and International Arbitration.

The rollout itself is the interesting part: office hours, workshops, one-on-one sessions with senior lawyers and playbooks built together with the firm. No usage or savings figures were published. CEO Miguel Zaldivar: "Through Harvey, we're perfecting the ways to capture and apply the expertise that exists across our firm".

Your angleA large firm can pay a vendor for workshops and co-built playbooks. A ten-person accountancy, notary or HR consultancy cannot, but it has the same need: turning how its best people work into steps an agent can follow. Interviewing those people, writing the playbook and training the team is a service you can sell to professional firms in one niche.

Demandbase: an agent that checks what AI says about your brand

Demandbase, a B2B marketing platform, launched three agents at its GO conference in New York. The AEO Agent (answer engine optimization) tracks how AI assistants describe a brand, flags outdated information and gaps, and shows anonymous traffic that arrives from AI assistants. A Campaign Agent and an Audience Agent work on campaigns and target lists. All three can be used "headless" through APIs and MCP, so other agents can call them.

Demandbase says it draws on more than 342 million contacts and 13 million companies, and cites Gartner's forecast that agents will mediate 90% of B2B purchases by 2028, worth more than $15 trillion. CEO Gabe Rogol: "Marketing to people isn't enough anymore because buyers no longer start with a search,"

Your angleEvery business can ask ChatGPT or Gemini what it says about them, and many will not like the answer. A monthly report of what AI assistants say about a client, which facts are wrong and what to fix on their site is easy to explain and easy to repeat. Pick one sector (installers, clinics, SaaS) so the questions you test are the ones their buyers ask.

General agents give answers. Industry agents take actions, and someone has to decide which ones.

Before you pick an industry niche: 5 checks

Spreadsheet an AI agent filled by itself: every action logged in a row the owner can check
In a niche, every client has the same rows: the same triggers, the same checks, the same report.
  1. Do you know the work? Pick a sector where you understand the daily problems, or can interview someone who does.
  2. Is there one painful, repeated task? A missed follow-up, a late repair, a wrong fact online. One task you can name in one sentence.
  3. Who signs off? Agree which actions the agent may take alone and which a person approves, before it goes live.
  4. Can you reuse it? The second client in the same niche should take half the setup time of the first. If not, the niche is too wide.
  5. What is it worth per month? Price the outcome, not the hours. Our pricing calculator helps, and the security checklist covers access to client systems.
🎯Niche beats general.

All three launches start from one sector's data and rules. That is why they can act, not just answer.

🛠Setup is the gap.

Templates, playbooks and workshops: each vendor still needs people to fit the agent to the business.

🔁Repeat it.

One niche, one service, many clients. Your second setup is faster, and your pitch gets sharper.

FAQ

What are Motive Agents?

Motive Agents are AI agents for truck and vehicle fleets that Motive launched on 19 October 2026. They act on safety and maintenance signals: the Atlas assistant can call a driver about fatigue or severe weather, open a work order in Motive Maintenance when a fault code puts a vehicle out of service, and escalate to a manager. They are available to Motive customers, with templates and a library of ready-made agents.

Why are industry AI agents a better niche than general agents?

An industry agent starts from one sector's data, tools and rules, so it can take a specific action instead of producing a general answer. The launches from Motive, Harvey and Demandbase all depend on setup work: choosing triggers, writing playbooks and training the people who use them. That setup work is the service a specialist can sell in one niche.

What is an AEO agent?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. Demandbase launched an AEO Agent on 20 October 2026 that tracks how AI assistants describe a brand, flags outdated information and gaps, and shows anonymous traffic that comes from AI assistants. It is one of three agents Demandbase announced, next to a Campaign Agent and an Audience Agent.
